By the end of the book of Genesis, the patriarchs were essentially an extended family of seventy people now living in Egypt beginning around 1876 B.C. Genesis 46:27. When Jacob blessed his twelve sons before his death, he revealed that from Judah’s descendants would come a kingly line even as Joseph reigned in Egypt as a type of king Genesis 49:8-12. God’s promise to Abraham to build him into a great nation had started but was not yet fulfilled Genesis 12:1-3.

The book of Exodus opens about four hundred years after Genesis ends, with Abraham’s offspring now enslaved as God had warned Genesis 15:13-16. God had blessed them incredibly, and Israel multiplied rapidly into a large and powerful people Exodus 1:6-14. Now the blessing of the Lord in their tremendous growth threatened the reigning Pharaoh, who enslaved them and ultimately sought to kill all their baby boys Exodus 1:15-22. Just as God had told Abraham that his descendants would be enslaved, the four-hundred years in Egypt set the stage for God’s deliverance of his people, which would come in 1446 BC through Moses.
