The Twelve return to the work Jesus gave them: proclaiming repentance, driving out demons, and healing the sick.
Their mission makes Jesus’ name widely known, but Herod Antipas interprets the news through a guilty memory—he fears that John, whom he beheaded, has risen. Mark then pauses the forward story to tell how the ruler silenced the prophet who had told him the truth.
The banquet exposes two kingdoms. Herod’s court is governed by appetite, status, manipulation, and fear of losing face. John belongs to the kingdom he proclaimed: he speaks God’s truth even to power and remains faithful when obedience costs his freedom and life. His burial anticipates Jesus’ own rejection and death, while the continuing spread of Jesus’ name shows that royal violence cannot silence God’s word or stop the mission of the King.

John condemns Antipas’s unlawful marriage; Herod imprisons the prophet whom he both fears and likes to hear.
An extravagant promise, Herodias’s hostility, and Herod’s concern for his guests converge in a murderous request.
Faithfulness when truth costs everything
Herod orders John’s execution, and John’s disciples honor his body by laying it in a tomb.
John’s death embodies the danger Jesus has described and prepares the story for the greater rejection of Jesus.
