Lesson overview
The disciples ask who is greatest, and Jesus places a child in their midst.
Entry into the kingdom requires a change of direction: becoming lowly and dependent rather than competing for rank. Jesus then widens the child’s significance to his "little ones," vulnerable believers whom the community must welcome, protect from stumbling, refuse to despise, and pursue when they wander. The Father’s concern for one lost sheep establishes the value system of his household.
That same concern governs Jesus’ teaching about sin within the community. Private correction, additional witnesses, and finally the gathered church are not a ladder for humiliation; they are an increasingly communal effort to regain a brother or sister. Even the gravest boundary serves truth, protection, repentance, and hoped-for restoration. Jesus promises his presence and authority to a community doing this difficult work in his name. Grace therefore creates neither status competition nor indifference to sin, but humble responsibility for every person entrusted to Christ’s people.

Become lowly like this child
Jesus calls for conversion from status-seeking to the humility and dependence embodied by a child.
The millstone warning and drastic bodily images communicate the seriousness of harming another’s faith or tolerating one’s own sin.
Jesus grounds the dignity of the lowly in their access to the Father’s heavenly court, while the mysterious reference to angels resists easy explanation.
See that you do not despise one of these little ones.
Matthew 18:10
Go first between the two of you
The Father values each little one and desires that none be lost.
Loving correction begins privately, honestly, and with the goal of winning back a brother or sister.
A careful process establishes the matter, protects against a solitary accusation, and gives repeated opportunity to listen.
Grace, dignity, and the Lord’s table
Jesus authorizes the gathered community to act in his name and promises his presence in the demanding work of discernment.
The sermon closes by locating salvation wholly in Christ’s work and calling the community to self-examination and equal dependence at communion.
