The Old Testament Prophets were God’s chosen vessels to deliver His message to the Israelites. They played a crucial role in the Israelites’ history and worship of their God. They spoke about the Lord’s love and justice, warned of impending judgment for disobedience, and offered hope for the future.
Many prophets throughout the Old Testament spoke the Word of the Lord, including people like Elijah and Elisha. However, most prophets wrote their prophecies, giving us seventeen books in the Old Testament. Their books are divided into two main categories: the Major Prophets and the Minor Prophets. The Major Prophets include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel, while the Minor Prophets include Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi.
God lays out the standard for prophets commanding that they never tell people to worship other gods or face the penalty of death Deuteronomy 13:1-11. While other nations may have prophets foretelling their future, God will raise his prophets which can be verified by the future events they predict coming true Deuteronomy 18:9-22.
While each prophet had a unique message and style, they all worked to guard the covenantal relationship between God and His people. They spoke to the people, especially the kings, calling them to repent, return to the Lord, or face the coming judgments for their sins. They also promised restoration and redemption for those who returned to God.
The prophets’ messages were often delivered through visions, dreams, and symbolic language. The Word of the Lord was only sometimes easy to understand or accept. However, they also brought hope, looking forward to the coming of a Messiah who would bring salvation to the world.
The prophets’ messages were often unpopular and met resistance from the people and their kings. Some were persecuted and even killed for speaking the truth. Through their powerful messages of hope, judgment, and redemption, the prophetic books remind us of the importance of faithfulness to God and the consequences of turning away from Him.
