During the conquest of Israel, Caleb offered his daughter Aksah to anyone who would conquer Debir, also known as Kiriath-Sepher. Othniel, son of Kenaz, who was Caleb’s younger brother, took the city and received Aksah as his wife. When Caleb gave her and her land as a present, Aksah also asked for a water source and was given the upper and lower springs Joshua 15:16-19 Judges 1:12-15.
Later, God’s anger burned against Israel because of their unfaithfulness to him. For eight years, he allowed his people to be subjected to Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram Naharaim. Eventually, the people cried out to the Lord, and God raised Othniel as their deliverer. The Spirit of the Lord was on Othniel, who inflicted God’s judgment on the people of Aram Naharaim, killing the Mesopotamian king. As Israel’s first judge, he restored the people of Israel, lasting 40 years until Othniel’s death Judges 3:7-11.
Othniel is remembered as a faithful servant of God who was willing to stand up against the enemies of Israel. His story shows God’s faithfulness and the importance of trusting Him for deliverance.
